Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen: The New Fashion Icons
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, the most adorable twins known to man (in the 90′s) starred as Michelle Tanner on the television sitcom Full House at only nine months old. They are not only known for being the twins on Full House, they are also known for their numerous appearances in a few direct to video movies like Passport to Paris and Win in Rome. In 2004, they were part of a Got Milk? campaign and had the opportunity to dual-host Saturday Night Live.
As the twins grew older, they realized that fashion was their new passion. Mary-Kate was known for her Bohemian-like style which was noticed by the New York Times who declared her as a fashion icon. Ashley was known for wearing fur which elected her in PETA’s Worst Dressed list in 2006.
They later started a clothing line called Mary-Kate and Ashley: Real fashion for real girls catered to ages 4 to 14. This line came out in Wal-Mart stores across North America, giving parents an opportunity to find reasonably priced clothing at a great quality.
In 2004, they signed a pledged allowing all workers that sew their line of clothing in Bangladesh full maternity leave. The National Labor Committee organized the pledge and later praised the twins for their commitment to workers right. This opened doors for the twins as the faces of upscale fashion line Badgley Maishka in 2006. As they attempt to gain more credibility in the fashion industry after being associated with Wal-Mart they decided to launch their own couture fashion label called The Row. This was named after the famous Savile Row of London. The new line for The Row was entitled “Elizabeth & James” named after their siblings.
Noticing the dynamic duo’s ability to do it all, Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen has announced that they’re taking their show online. This means they’re starting an Internet-based fashion-of-the-month-club that will give their users a customizable shopping experience. Even though they have three fashion lines, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen believe that the sky is the limit!
According to Styleite, Mary-Kate and Ashley will help design and merchandise all of the clothing on StyleMint, their new venture with MySpace co-founder Josh Berman. Berman has a web shopping company called BeachMint which is already successful with actress Kate Bosworth and her stylist Cher Coulter where they design jewelry and sell it for $30 a piece.
Majority of StyleMint’s garments will sell for the same price which will be beneficial for anyone wanting to sell their fashion line thorough Berman’s web company. WWD reports that neither site is your everyday online shopping experience. After registering, users are asked to take short style quizzes to determine what kinds of items they’d be most likely to buy. Then each month, based on their answers, users are pitched on a variety of selections. The idea is that with each purchase, the sites algorithm will get to know each user better, and will be able to offer up things they’d be likely to buy.
I’d say it’s a great way to enjoy an online shopping experience, plus if you can never find a suitable online store to shop on this may finally be what you’ve been waiting for.
What do you think about the twins next step in success? Will you start shopping on StyleMint?
